Professional Mulching in New Orleans: Healthy Beds, Clean Borders
Mulch isn’t decoration. It’s the layer that holds moisture through gulf summers, chokes out weeds, feeds your beds as it breaks down, and ties the whole yard together visually. TurnKey installs it right, twice a year.

Mulch does the work your hose and your back shouldn’t have to.
In New Orleans, a bare bed is a weed bed within two weeks. The humidity, the rain, the year-round growing season, weeds love what your azaleas love.
Done right, mulch solves four problems at once: it suppresses weeds before they start, it keeps soil moisture so you water less, it feeds your beds as it breaks down, and it gives every bed a clean dark border that makes plantings look intentional.
Done wrong (piled against trunks, the wrong depth, the cheap-dyed kind that fades to gray in three months), it can actually hurt your plants. We do it right.

โ COMMON QUESTIONS
Mulching in New Orleans: What Homeowners Ask Us
How often should I re-mulch my beds?
Twice a year for most New Orleans yards: a heavier refresh in spring (March-April) and a lighter top-up in fall (October). The humidity and rain break mulch down faster here than in drier climates, so once-a-year isn’t enough if you want the beds to keep looking clean.
What kind of mulch is best for New Orleans?
Double-shredded hardwood is our default, it holds together in heavy rain, doesn’t float away, and breaks down into soil-feeding humus. Pine straw is great for acid-loving plants (azaleas, camellias). Cypress is rot-resistant but more expensive. We never use dyed mulch unless a client specifically asks, the dye fades to ash gray within months.
How much mulch is too much?
More than 3 inches. Anything thicker suffocates roots, holds too much water against stems, and gives termites a highway to your house. We install 2 to 3 inches, every time, no exceptions, and we pull existing mulch off trunks if previous crews piled it up.
Will mulch attract termites?
Only if it’s piled against your foundation or wood structures. Properly installed mulch in beds 12+ inches from the house is not a termite risk in New Orleans, but we always leave a clear gap between mulch and any wood, including deck posts, fence bases, and the foundation itself.
Can you do bed expansion or new bed install at the same time?
Yes. If you want to expand an existing bed or carve a new one, we can edge, prep, and mulch it in the same visit. Mention it during the free estimate so we can quote the prep work and the mulch volume together.
